Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala / Entebbe → Lake Mburo NP (230 km) + Afternoon Activities
Depart Kampala mid-morning (no early start needed — this is a relaxed weekend). Drive south-west on the Kampala–Mbarara highway through the rolling Ankole cattle country. Total drive: 230 km, approx. 4 hours. Arrive Lake Mburo by early afternoon. Check in. Lunch at the lodge. Afternoon: Lake Boat Ride (1.5 hours). Board a flat-bottomed boat on Lake Mburo — hippos surface constantly around the boat, crocodiles bask on exposed rocks, African fish eagles call from the shoreline trees, and the lake's 350+ bird species provide a constant backdrop. The boat weaves between papyrus islands and tree-lined shores where buffalo drink and impala watch from the bank. One of Uganda's most relaxing wildlife experiences. Evening: Sundowner game drive. The acacia woodland around Lake Mburo at dusk is exceptional — zebra moving in herds, eland (Africa's largest antelope) browsing in groups, and topi with their distinctive mauve colouring. Dinner at your lakeside lodge. Night sounds over the water.
Day 2
Morning Horse Riding Safari + Walking Safari → Return Kampala (230 km)
7:00am: Horse Riding Safari. This is Lake Mburo's most distinctive experience. Ride through the acacia woodland on trained safari horses — approaching zebra and impala far more closely than any vehicle could. Wildlife habituated to horses allows intimate encounters. Even beginners are fully catered for — no riding experience required. Helmets and all equipment provided. 9:30am: Guided Walking Safari with an armed UWA ranger. Lake Mburo is one of Uganda's few parks where extensive walking is permitted. Follow your ranger through the woodland, tracking fresh prints and interpreting the ecosystem at ground level. Return to lodge for breakfast. Pack and depart by noon. Return to Kampala (230 km, approx. 4 hours). Arrive by early evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this suitable for children and non-safari-experienced visitors?
Yes — Lake Mburo is Uganda's most family-friendly and beginner-friendly national park. The terrain is gentle, the drives are on good murram roads, the boat ride is completely safe and relaxing, and the horse riding is accessible to beginners. It's an excellent first safari experience.
What makes Lake Mburo special compared to other Uganda parks?
Three things make Mburo unique: Burchell's zebra (the only population in southern Uganda), horse-riding safaris (not available in any other Uganda park), and location (just 4 hours from Kampala — no long drives required). It's also the most affordable park entry in Uganda. It won't overwhelm you with dramatic wildlife, but it is consistently one of the most enjoyable and relaxing wildlife experiences in the country.
Can I combine Lake Mburo with another park?
Absolutely. Lake Mburo is perfectly positioned as a Day 1 stop en route to Queen Elizabeth NP (additional 3 hours) or as a final stop returning from Bwindi Gorilla Trek. Our PKG-005 Pearl of Africa package includes Mburo as Day 10. Tell us your itinerary and we'll build in Mburo seamlessly.
"Uganda's wildlife parks are among Africa's most diverse and least crowded safari destinations. From tree-climbing lions to the prehistoric Shoebill, from the world's most powerful waterfall to the Great Migration — your safari is waiting. Start your Roam Beyond payment plan today."
