Queen Elizabeth Tree-Climbing Lion Safari
3 Days · Ishasha Lions · Kazinga Channel · 600 Bird Species

"Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most biodiverse wildlife destination — a park straddling the equator where the savannah meets the Albertine Rift, where hippos crowd every channel, and where lions do something found almost nowhere else on Earth: they climb trees. The Ishasha Sector's fig tree lions are among Africa's most photographed animals. Combine them with the extraordinary Kazinga Channel cruise — the world's highest hippo concentration — and you have two experiences that will define your Uganda memories."

Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala / Entebbe → Queen Elizabeth NP — Kasenyi Plains (400 km)
Early morning departure southwest on the Kampala–Mbarara highway, continuing through Mbarara and into the Queen Elizabeth NP area. Total drive: 400 km, approx. 6 hours. Check in at your lodge on the Mweya Peninsula or near Katunguru. Afternoon game drive in the Kasenyi plains — the park's premier open savannah for lion, elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, and topi. Your guide knows the lion territories intimately. Sunset over Lake Edward with the Rwenzori Mountains on the western horizon. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2
Kazinga Channel Cruise + Ishasha Tree-Climbing Lions
Morning: Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise. Board the launch for a 2-hour cruise on the 32km Kazinga Channel connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. This channel holds the world's highest concentration of hippos — thousands crowd every bank, their pink ears twitching, their explosive exhalations creating constant movement around the boat. Enormous Nile crocodiles bask on every sandbank. African skimmer, pink-backed pelican, African fish eagle, pied and malachite kingfishers, and the elegant African jacana line the shores. Over 100 bird species can be logged on a single cruise. Afternoon: Drive to Ishasha Sector — Tree-Climbing Lions. The drive south through the park takes approximately 2 hours. Begin your game drive in Ishasha's open fig tree woodland — scanning every tree carefully. When you find them — and the success rate here is very high — the sight is extraordinary: full-grown lions sprawled in the branches of giant fig trees, 3, 4, sometimes 6 metres above the ground, watching the plains below with absolute calm. This behaviour, found almost nowhere else in the world, is believed to be a response to ground-level insects and the desire to catch breeze. Game drive until sunset.
Day 3
Ishasha Dawn Drive → Return Kampala / Entebbe (400 km)
One final dawn game drive in Ishasha — the lions are often active at first light and the golden hour light for photography is extraordinary. Then depart north for the return drive to Kampala or Entebbe (400 km, approx. 6 hours). Arrive by evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are tree-climbing lions guaranteed?
No wildlife is ever fully guaranteed — animals move freely. However, Ishasha has multiple lion prides and the fig tree climbing behaviour is very well established. Our success rate for tree lion sightings over the past 3 years is approximately 80%+ with guests who spend at least 2 hours in Ishasha. If lions aren't in trees on your visit, they are almost always found on the ground in Ishasha.
Can I add chimpanzee tracking at Kyambura Gorge?
Yes — Kyambura Gorge, home to a small isolated chimp community in a dramatic 100m-deep canyon, is inside Queen Elizabeth NP and can be added to Day 2 morning for $50pp permit. This makes your QE safari a primate-and-wildlife combo. Tell us when booking and we'll slot it into the itinerary.
What makes the Kazinga Channel special?
The Kazinga Channel is a 32km natural waterway connecting two Rift Valley lakes. UWA estimates over 5,000 hippos live along its banks — the highest concentration anywhere in the world. The 2-hour cruise on a flat-bottomed launch takes you within metres of hippo pods. Combined with the extraordinary birding and the Nile crocodile sightings, it is consistently rated as one of Uganda's greatest wildlife experiences.
