Gorge Swim & Rappel — Kyegegwa Canyon
1-Day Adventure · Canyon Hiking · Natural Slides · Gorge Rappelling

"Uganda's newest adventure experience — and one of its most extraordinary. Kyegegwa Canyon in western Uganda is a series of sculpted granite gorges where the river has carved deep swimming pools, polished natural water slides, and dramatic rappelling faces over cascading water. Canyon hiking, swimming, sliding, and rappelling on a single day trip from Kampala — an activity that very few tourists have yet discovered."

Itinerary — Day by Day
Morning
Kampala → Kyegegwa Canyon (180km, 3 hrs) + Canyon Entry
Depart Kampala by 6:00am on the Kampala–Fort Portal highway. (180km, approximately 3 hours on good tarmac.) Arrive at the canyon access point by 9am. Meet your local Kyegegwa community guide — young men from the surrounding villages who have spent years exploring every pool and channel of this extraordinary gorge system. Safety Briefing. Harnesses fitted, helmets on, ropes checked. Your guide explains the canyon sections, the swimming pool depths, and the rappel faces. Then you descend into the gorge.
Midday
Canyon Hiking + Natural Water Slides + Swimming Pools
The canyon experience has four distinct elements: Canyon Hiking. Walking through the gorge itself — the walls narrowing to just a few metres in places, the granite polished smooth by millennia of water, with the river gurgling below and the forest visible far above. Natural Water Slides. The river has carved smooth, sloping rock channels that function as perfect natural slides — 3, 5, and 8 metres long, ending in deep swimming pools. You slide down exactly as the water does. Again. And again. Swimming Pools. Deep, clear, naturally filtered pools between the rock formations. The water is cool and absolutely clean — no crocodiles, no hippos, no bilharzia risk in these fast-moving upstream channels. Gorge Rappelling. The canyon has several sections where the gorge drops steeply — your guide sets up ropes and you rappel down the rock face with water flowing beside you (or, at some points, directly over you). This is the adrenaline peak of the day. Lunch on a flat rock in the canyon.
Afternoon
Return to Kampala (180km, 3 hrs)
Exit the canyon. Change into dry clothes (bring a change). Return drive to Kampala (180km, 3 hours). Arrive by 6–7pm.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a well-known activity?
No — Kyegegwa Canyon is one of Uganda's newest and least-known adventure destinations. This is precisely what makes it special. You will very likely be the only tourist in the gorge on your day. The activity is managed by the local Kyegegwa community with Roam Beyond's safety equipment and guidance. We are actively supporting this community tourism development.
Do I need swimming experience?
You need to be comfortable in water — the swimming pools are deep and you will get very wet. You don't need to be a strong swimmer as the pools are calm and depths are known by the guide. The rappelling sections require physical fitness and comfort with heights but no prior rappelling experience.
How does this compare to Sipi Falls abseiling?
Different experiences. Sipi is a single dramatic abseil alongside a major 100m waterfall — very vertical, very impressive. Kyegegwa is a canyon day — multiple swimming, sliding, and rappelling sections across an entire day in an enclosed gorge. Sipi is more dramatic; Kyegegwa is more immersive and playful. Both are extraordinary.
"Uganda's adventure scene is extraordinary — and most visitors never discover half of it. From Grade 5 Nile rapids to equatorial mountain summits, from canyon swims to gorilla treks, this country rewards the curious traveller. Start your Roam Beyond payment plan today."
