Mabira Forest Zipline & Canopy Walk
1-Day Trip · Canopy Zip-Line · Forest Walk · Birding

"Mabira Forest Reserve is Uganda's largest and most accessible tropical rainforest — a 306km² cathedral of ancient trees, primate calls, and extraordinary bird life just 1.5 hours east of Kampala. The forest canopy zip-line takes you flying between giant fig trees 30 metres above the forest floor. The guided nature walk produces red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and a dawn chorus that drowns out all other thought. The perfect Kampala day escape."

Itinerary — Day by Day
Morning
Kampala → Mabira Forest Reserve (60km, 1.5 hrs)
Depart your Kampala hotel at 7:30am. Drive east on the Kampala–Jinja highway through Mukono and Lugazi, with the forest visible from the road as you approach. Arrive Mabira Eco Camp or Forest Exploration Centre by 9am. Guided Forest Nature Walk (2 hours). Your forest guide leads you into the reserve on well-maintained trails. Mabira has 287 bird species — including the white-tailed ant thrush, blue-headed sunbird, and the extraordinary great blue turaco. Red-tailed monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys swing overhead. The forest floor is a tapestry of mushrooms, ferns, and insects. For birders and non-birders alike, Mabira on foot is a revelation.
Midday
Canopy Zip-Line + Butterfly Farm + Forest Lunch
The Canopy Zip-Line. Mabira's zip-line system takes you 30 metres above the forest floor across a series of platforms between giant fig and mahogany trees. The longest single run is approximately 200 metres — you're flying through the canopy at eye level with the turacos, the forest spreading endlessly below. A safety-certified harness system is fitted by trained staff. The experience is accessible to most ages and fitness levels. Butterfly Farm. Mabira is home to an extraordinary butterfly diversity — over 218 species. The farm raises and releases endemic and endemic-adjacent species, and walking through the netted enclosure surrounded by iridescent wings is surprisingly magical. Picnic lunch in a forest clearing.
Afternoon
Return Kampala (60km)
Depart the forest by 3pm. Return to Kampala by 4:30–5pm. A complete, enriching, and genuinely restorative day from Uganda's capital.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the zip-line suitable for children?
Yes — Mabira's zip-line is suitable for children approximately 8 years and older, weight permitting. The safety system is designed for a range of ages and sizes. It is also completely suitable for adults with no zip-lining experience. The facilitators are trained and the equipment is certified.
What is the best time of day for forest birding?
The dawn window (7–10am) is always the best for forest birding — birds are most active and vocal, and the light through the canopy is beautiful. This is why we depart Kampala early. If you're a serious birder, tell us when booking and we'll push the departure to 6:30am to maximise time in the forest before heat silences the bird activity.
Can I combine Mabira with Jinja in a single day?
Yes — Mabira is perfectly positioned between Kampala and Jinja on the same highway. A morning in Mabira followed by an afternoon at Jinja (Source of the Nile, Nile boat cruise, or first half-day of our A-01 rafting weekend) is an excellent and very achievable combination.
