Location
Bwindi Impenetrable NP — Rushaga Sector (Southern Bwindi, most gorilla families, closest to Lake Bunyonyi)
Key Highlights
Gorilla trek · Nkuringo viewpoints · Lake Bunyonyi excursion option · Local village walk
3-Day Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala / Entebbe → Bwindi (Rushaga Sector, Southern Gate)
Early morning departure southwest. Drive via Fort Portal or Kabale depending on route. Pass through dramatic Kigezi highlands — the 'Switzerland of Africa'. Arrive Rushaga sector late afternoon. Check in to your lodge near the southern gate — with views toward the Virunga volcanoes on clear days. Trek briefing with your Roam Beyond guide over dinner.
Day 2
GORILLA TREK — Rushaga Sector + Nkuringo Viewpoints
7:30am start at Rushaga park headquarters. Rushaga's strength is the number of habituated gorilla families — 6+ groups including Nshongi (one of the largest in the world with 20+ members). Your UWA ranger assigns your group to a family based on your fitness level and family location. Trek through secondary forest and bamboo stands. Spend a full 60 minutes with your assigned gorilla family — photographs, observation, and a silence you won't soon forget.
Afternoon: drive to the Nkuringo cliff viewpoint — dramatic views across Bwindi's forested valleys and on clear days, the Congo border and Virunga volcano chain. Optional village walk in the Nkuringo community.
Day 3
Rushaga → Entebbe (or extend to Lake Bunyonyi)
Breakfast then morning departure. Option A: return directly to Kampala/Entebbe (8–9 hours). Option B: extend your tour by driving 1.5 hours to Lake Bunyonyi — 29 islands, terraced crater lake, afternoon canoe, and overnight (supplement applies). Ask us to add the Bunyonyi extension — it's one of Uganda's most beautiful experiences and makes the long return drive worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Rushaga different from Buhoma?
Rushaga has the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families in Bwindi — 6+ groups vs 2–3 in Buhoma. This means more permit availability and more chance of a shorter trek. Rushaga is also closer to Lake Bunyonyi (45 minutes) making it easy to combine. The terrain is slightly steeper than Buhoma.
Can I see the Nshongi gorilla family?
The Nshongi group — one of the largest gorilla families ever recorded — is one of the Rushaga families available for trekking. Family assignment is made by UWA rangers on the morning of your trek based on location and fitness level. We cannot guarantee a specific family, but Rushaga's volume means availability is excellent.
Is Lake Bunyonyi worth the extension?
Absolutely. Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda's most beautiful natural wonders — a deep crater lake with 29 islands, crystal water, birdsong, and extraordinary peace. Most visitors who add the extension say it was the highlight of their trip. We can easily add 1–2 nights for a modest supplement.
