Why This Combo is Unique
"Uganda is the only country in the world where you can do both gorilla trekking AND chimpanzee tracking on a single trip. Rwanda has gorillas but no chimps. Tanzania has chimps but no mountain gorillas. Only Uganda — with Kibale Forest and Bwindi side by side — gives you both. Two permits, two forests, two encounters that will define how you see the natural world."

Day 1
Entebbe / Kampala → Kibale Forest National Park

Stop at the equator crossing for photos, then continue through the Rift Valley escarpment and the spectacular Queen Elizabeth area toward Fort Portal.
Arrive at Kibale Forest Lodge in the late afternoon. Kibale Forest NP is the most primate-rich forest in Africa — home to 13 species including 1,500+ chimpanzees. Evening briefing from your guide. Dinner and overnight at your Kibale lodge.
Distance: Kampala to Kibale approx. 5–6 hours (360 km).

Day 2
Chimpanzee Tracking — Kibale Forest (Morning) + Bigodi Wetland Walk (Afternoon)
Rise early for breakfast before heading to Kanyanchu trailhead at 7:30am. After UWA ranger briefing, set off into Kibale Forest with trackers, rangers, and your Roam Beyond guide. The chimps are almost always found — calling, crashing through trees, grooming, and moving at breathtaking speed through the canopy.
Spend 1 hour with a habituated chimpanzee community. Observe them feeding on figs, displaying dominance, nursing infants, and socialising — behaviours that will strike you as unsettlingly human. With luck, you'll also see grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, and L'Hoest's monkeys on the same trek.
Return for lunch at the lodge. Afternoon: walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a community-led conservation project bordering Kibale. This 4km trail through papyrus swamp and riverine forest is exceptional for birds (200+ species) and additional primate sightings. Guided by local community members.
Chimp permit: $250 pp — included.

Day 3
Kibale → Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast, depart Kibale and drive south through the dramatic Kasese plains, past the Rwenzori Mountains (Africa's third highest range, permanently snow-capped), and up into the Kigezi highlands — some of the most beautiful scenery in Africa.
Arrive at Lake Bunyonyi in the early afternoon. This terraced crater lake — described as the "Switzerland of Africa" — is one of Uganda's most beautiful natural wonders. Check in to your lake-view lodge and spend the afternoon at leisure: canoe on the lake, swim in the warm water, or simply watch the sun set over the 29 islands from your veranda.
Distance: Kibale to Lake Bunyonyi approx. 3.5 hours.
Overnight: Lake Bunyonyi lodge or island bungalow.

Lake Bunyonyi → Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Morning at leisure at Lake Bunyonyi — optional early morning canoe trip to an island before breakfast. After breakfast, drive 1.5 hours to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arrive for check-in, a brief orientation, and afternoon rest in preparation for tomorrow's gorilla trek.
Enjoy an evening walk in Bwindi's buffer zone and dinner with your guide — who will explain what to expect during the gorilla encounter, sector details, and trekking strategy.
Overnight: Bwindi lodge (Buhoma, Rushaga, or Ruhija sector — chosen based on your fitness level and permit allocation).

Day 5
The Gorilla Trek — 1 Hour with Mountain Gorillas + Batwa Culture
This is the day. Wake early, eat well, and arrive at park headquarters at 7:30am. After briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, your group of max 8 sets off into the forest. Armed rangers, expert trackers, and your guide lead you through Bwindi's ancient montane forest — mossy trunks, twisted canopy, the sound of mist and birdsong.
When you find the gorillas — and you will — time slows. The silverback sits 8 metres away. A juvenile tumbles through the undergrowth. A mother nurses her infant while watching you with intelligent eyes. You have one full hour with them. Cameras are silent. Breathing is steady. Nothing else exists.
Return to the lodge for a celebratory lunch. Afternoon: Batwa cultural experience with indigenous forest guides from the Bwindi Batwa community — learn their traditional fire-making, forest medicine, honey gathering, and hear their remarkable story.
Gorilla permit: $800 pp — included.

After a final breakfast in the forest, begin the return journey north. Your driver-guide takes a scenic route through Kabale, past Lake Mutanda (Virunga volcano views), through Kabale town and north toward Kampala.
Stop for lunch en route at a local restaurant, browse craft markets, and photograph the endless hill-terrace landscapes of Kigezi — Uganda's most scenic region. Arrive Kampala or Entebbe by evening.
Flight connection tip: Book departures no earlier than 9pm on Day 6, or add a final night in Entebbe.
