Package Highlights & Location
Location
Mgahinga Gorilla NP — Kisoro District, Virunga Volcanoes (Uganda/Rwanda/DRC tri-border area)
Key Highlights
Gorilla trek (Nyakagezi family) · Golden monkey trekking ($100 permit) · Virunga volcano views · Batwa experience
3-Day Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala / Entebbe → Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Kisoro)
Long but spectacular drive southwest — through Fort Portal, past the Rwenzori Mountains (Africa's Mountains of the Moon), through Kabale and the Kigezi highlands to Kisoro, gateway to Mgahinga. Arrive late afternoon. Your lodge sits at the base of the Virunga volcanoes — Mt. Muhabura, Mt. Gahinga, and Mt. Sabinyo tower above you. Trek briefing at dinner.
Day 2
Golden Monkey Trekking (Morning) + Gorilla Trek (Afternoon — or Day 3 morning)
MORNING — Golden Monkey Trekking ($100 permit included): Trek into Mgahinga's bamboo zone to find the endangered Golden Monkey — one of the most visually stunning primates in Africa, found only in the Virunga highlands. These acrobatic, brilliantly-coloured monkeys are remarkably relaxed around visitors. Spend 1 hour with the habituated troop. Extraordinary photography.
AFTERNOON — Rest and late afternoon volcano hike option, or prepare for tomorrow's gorilla trek.
Note: Gorilla and golden monkey treks are sometimes scheduled on the same morning for half-groups by UWA — your guide manages logistics to ensure you see both.
Day 3
GORILLA TREK — Nyakagezi Family + Return to Kampala
7:30am start for the gorilla trek — tracking the Nyakagezi gorilla family, Uganda's most famous and most filmed gorilla group. This family has been habituated for decades and is remarkably calm. Silverback Mark (the dominant male) is a magnificent animal. Trek through bamboo and volcanic forest to find the family — spend 60 minutes with them. Return to lodge for lunch. Afternoon: drive back north to Kampala (arrive late evening) or overnight in Kabale.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Mgahinga different from Bwindi?
Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla family (Nyakagezi) vs 22+ in Bwindi. This means a more intimate and exclusive experience with no risk of large groups. The landscape is also completely different — Bwindi is dense equatorial forest; Mgahinga is open volcanic slopes with bamboo zones and Virunga mountain views. Both are extraordinary, but Mgahinga feels more remote and cinematic.
Is the golden monkey permit really included?
Yes. The golden monkey trekking permit ($100 per person) is included in the G-03 package price. Both the gorilla permit ($800) and golden monkey permit ($100) — a combined value of $900 — are included.
Can the Nyakagezi family be seen with confidence?
Yes. The Nyakagezi family is well-habituated and has never moved permanently outside the park. There is occasional cross-border movement into Rwanda (rare) — on the very few occasions the family is not in Uganda, UWA will reschedule your trek or offer alternatives. Our success rate at Mgahinga is excellent.
