Visas & Entry Requirements
Everything to know before you fly
1
East Africa Tourist Visa
The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda in a single entry. Ideal if combining a multi-country safari โ€” apply in advance at immigration.go.ug.
2
Single-Country Uganda Visa
Uganda single-entry visa costs USD 50 (most nationalities). Apply online at least 2 weeks before travel at evisa.immigration.go.ug or on arrival at Entebbe Airport.
3
Yellow Fever Certificate
A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is legally required for entry into Uganda. Carry the physical card โ€” you will be asked for it at immigration.
4
Passport Validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date. Ensure you have at least 2 blank pages for stamps and visas.

Important:

Roam Beyond Tours will request copies of your passport, visa, and yellow fever certificate at time of booking. Please have these documents ready before travel.

COVID-19Check CurrentCheck current entry requirements before travel โ€” regulations change frequently.
๐Ÿ’Š
Medication & First Aid
Bring a personal first aid kit. Kampala has good pharmacies, but availability in remote areas is limited. Carry any prescription medication with a doctor's letter.
๐ŸฆŸ
Mosquito Protection
Use DEET-based repellent (50%+), sleep under treated nets, and wear long sleeves after dusk. Malaria risk is highest in lowland and lakeside areas.
๐Ÿ’ง
Water Safety
Do not drink tap water. Lodges provide bottled or filtered water. Use sterilising tablets for remote areas. Avoid ice in budget establishments.
๐Ÿฅ
Medical Facilities
Kampala has International Hospital Kampala (IHK) and Aga Khan Hospital for quality care. Remote areas have limited facilities โ€” medical evacuation insurance is essential.
๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ
Weather, Climate & Best Time to Visit
Uganda is beautiful year-round โ€” here's how each season feels
โ˜€๏ธ
Peak Dry Season
June โ€“ September
Best gorilla trekking, drier trails, excellent wildlife viewing
๐ŸŒค๏ธ
Short Dry Season
Dec โ€“ February
Excellent birding, good trekking, festive season crowds
๐ŸŒง๏ธ
Long Rains
March โ€“ May
Lush forests, fewer crowds, lower prices, muddy trails
๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ
Short Rains
October โ€“ November
Good value, green landscapes, brief afternoon showers
โ„น๏ธ
Temperature Guide:

Uganda's equatorial climate keeps temperatures comfortable year-round: 20โ€“28ยฐC (68โ€“82ยฐF) in most areas. Bwindi and Rwenzori are cooler (12โ€“18ยฐC at altitude). Evenings can be cold in the mountains โ€” always pack a warm layer.

Money, Currency & Payments
Practical financial advice for your safari
CurrencyUganda Shilling (UGX)
Exchange Rate~3,700 UGX = 1 USD
USD AcceptedMost lodges & permits
ATMsAvailable in Kampala & Entebbe
CardsVisa widely; Mastercard in cities
Mobile MoneyMTN & Airtel widely accepted
๐Ÿ’ฑ
Best Exchange Strategy
Bring crisp, undamaged USD bills (printed after 2006 preferred). Exchange at Kampala's forex bureaux (Kikuubo area) for better rates than airports or hotels.
๐Ÿ’ธ
Cash Is King in Remote Areas
Outside Kampala and Entebbe, card machines are rare. Carry sufficient UGX cash for tips, crafts, and local purchases. ATMs can be unreliable in rural towns.
๐Ÿ™
Tipping Culture
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Common amounts: guides USD 10โ€“20/day, drivers USD 5โ€“10/day, lodge staff USD 1โ€“3/day. Roam Beyond Tours provides a full tipping guide before your trip.
๐Ÿ”’
Financial Security
Notify your bank before travel to avoid card blocks. Use a money belt in Kampala markets. Keep emergency USD separated from main funds in your accommodation safe.
๐Ÿ“ฑ
Connectivity, SIM Cards & Internet
Staying connected in the Pearl of Africa
๐Ÿ“ถ
Local SIM Cards
Buy a local SIM card on arrival at Entebbe Airport or Kampala. MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda offer the best coverage in national parks. Cost: ~UGX 5,000 (SIM) + data bundles.
๐ŸŒ
Internet Coverage
4G is available in Kampala, Entebbe, Fort Portal, and Jinja. Coverage in national parks (Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison) is limited to 2G/3G in select areas โ€” embrace the digital detox!
๐Ÿ“ก
Lodge WiFi
Most mid-range and luxury lodges offer WiFi in common areas. Speed varies significantly by location. Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before leaving Kampala.
๐Ÿ”‹
Power & Adapters
Uganda uses UK-style Type G plugs (3 square pins), 240V. Bring a universal adapter. Remote lodges may only provide power during limited hours โ€” charge devices when you can.
๐Ÿš
Getting Around Uganda
Transport options from budget to luxury
๐Ÿš
Safari 4WD Vehicles
All Roam Beyond Tours safaris use comfortable 4WD Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for wildlife viewing. Ideal for national park game drives on unpaved roads.
โœˆ๏ธ
Domestic Charter Flights
Short-hop flights between Entebbe and remote parks (Kidepo, Bwindi, Murchison) save significant road time. We can arrange charters โ€” highly recommended for premium itineraries.
๐Ÿ›บ
Boda-Bodas (Motorbike Taxis)
Ubiquitous in Ugandan towns. Only use for short distances in daylight. Insist on a helmet, agree on price before riding, and avoid overloaded bikes or night rides.
๐Ÿš•
Taxis in Kampala
Use Uber, Bolt, or SafeBoda apps in Kampala for safe, priced rides. Negotiate fares with regular taxis before entering the vehicle. Never use unmarked vehicles at night.
๐Ÿšจ
Road Safety Warning:

Road conditions vary significantly across Uganda. Night driving is strongly discouraged due to potholes, livestock on roads, and limited lighting. All Roam Beyond Tours drivers are vetted, experienced professionals. Do not hire unknown drivers for national park routes.

๐Ÿค
Cultural Etiquette & Local Customs
Respect that opens doors across Uganda
๐Ÿ‘‹
Greetings Matter Deeply
Ugandans place great value on greetings. Learn "Oli otya" (how are you in Luganda) โ€” the response is "Bulungi" (fine). A warm greeting goes a long way in rural communities.
๐Ÿ‘—
Dress Modestly in Communities
Cover shoulders and knees when visiting villages, markets, and religious sites. Safari clothing is fine in national parks, but pack a sarong or light trousers for community visits.
๐Ÿ“ธ
Photography Etiquette
Always ask permission before photographing Ugandans. Many appreciate a small token of appreciation. Never photograph military installations, government buildings, or near border posts.
๐Ÿ™
Religion & Customs
Uganda is predominantly Christian and Muslim. Sunday church services are important cultural events. Dress appropriately if visiting religious sites and remove shoes as required.
