Rwenzori Mountains Trekking
7 Days · Summit Margherita Peak 5,109m · Mountains of the Moon

"The Rwenzori Mountains are Africa's third highest mountain range and the only equatorial mountains on Earth with permanent glaciers. Called the 'Mountains of the Moon' by ancient cartographers who placed them at the source of the Nile, the Rwenzoris are extraordinary: giant heathers, alien lobelias, groundsel trees that grow 10 metres high, equatorial snow, alpine lakes, and the summit of Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres above sea level. This is Uganda's most demanding and most rewarding adventure."

Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala → Kasese (340km) + Rwenzori Base Briefing
Drive west from Kampala to Kasese — gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains. (340km, approx. 5–6 hours via Fort Portal.) Your mountain guide meets you for a detailed briefing: route, altitude profile, gear check, and acclimatisation strategy. Overnight at Kasese hotel. Early sleep — 6:00am departure tomorrow.
Day 2
Trek Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,646m) → Sine Hut (2,621m) — 10km
Enter the Rwenzori National Park at Nyakalengija trailhead. Begin ascending through dense tropical montane forest — giant trees draped in moss and lichen, L'Hoest's monkeys calling above, chimpanzees possible. The forest floor is muddy and magical. Arrive Sine Hut (2,621m) in approximately 6 hours. Evening briefing from your guide. Dinner in the mountain hut.
Day 3
Trek Day 2: Sine Hut (2,621m) → Mutinda Hut (3,798m) — 9km
Vegetation changes dramatically today: exit the forest zone and enter the giant heather zone — twisted heather trees 5–8 metres tall covered in old man's beard lichen. Otherworldly. Cross several streams and rock faces. Altitude begins to be felt. Arrive Mutinda Hut (3,798m) in approximately 7 hours.
Day 4
Trek Day 3: Mutinda Hut (3,798m) → Elena Hut (4,541m) — 8km (Summit Base)
Today enters the afroalpine zone — giant groundsel trees (Dendrosenecio), giant lobelias, and moorland stretching to the ridgelines. The landscape has the quality of a dream. The altitude is serious — headache possible, pace slows. Arrive Elena Hut (4,541m) in approximately 6–7 hours. This is summit base camp. Rest, hydrate, early dinner, and sleep by 7pm.
Day 5
SUMMIT DAY: Elena Hut (4,541m) → Margherita Peak (5,109m) → Elena Hut
2:00am wake-up. Pre-dawn start with head torches. The final ascent crosses the Stanley Glacier — ropes, crampons if available, and your guide's expertise. The summit push in darkness and cold. And then — at 5,109 metres, the highest point in Uganda and the third highest in Africa — the sun rises over the Nile basin. Equatorial snow on the summit. The Congo forest below. This moment is why people climb mountains. Descend to Elena Hut. Rest. Then continue descent to Mutinda Hut for overnight.
Day 6
Trek Day 5: Mutinda Hut → Nyakalengija (Descent — 19km)
Long descent through the complete vegetation zones in reverse — afroalpine to heathland to cloud forest to tropical forest. Knees take the load today. Emerge at Nyakalengija trailhead in the late afternoon. Your vehicle waits. Drive to Kasese hotel for the best shower of your life, a cold drink, and dinner.
Day 7
Kasese → Kampala / Entebbe (340km)
Return drive east to Kampala or Entebbe (340km, approx. 5–6 hours). Your guide presents your summit certificate. Arrive by evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fit do I need to be for the Rwenzori?
This is a serious mountain trek — not technical climbing, but demanding. You need good cardiovascular fitness and experience with multi-day walking. The daily stages average 8–10km but are on steep, often muddy terrain at altitude. We recommend 3–4 months of training including weekly long hikes with a loaded backpack before attempting this trek. Your guide will set a sustainable pace.
What is the altitude risk?
Margherita Peak at 5,109m carries genuine altitude risk (Acute Mountain Sickness — AMS). The ascent profile is designed for gradual acclimatisation. Symptoms of AMS include headache, nausea, and fatigue — these are normal at altitude. Serious AMS (confusion, loss of coordination) requires immediate descent. Your mountain guide is trained in altitude medicine and the standard UWA mountain rescue coverage is included. We strongly recommend supplementary travel insurance with altitude rescue cover.
What specialist equipment do I need?
Essential personal equipment: warm waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, thermal base layers, warm hat and gloves, gaiters, trekking poles (highly recommended), sturdy waterproof boots with ankle support, sleeping bag rated to -5°C, and a headtorch with spare batteries. The mountain is wet and cold regardless of season — there is no dry season on the Rwenzoris. A full gear list is sent on booking.
"Uganda's adventure scene is extraordinary — and most visitors never discover half of it. From Grade 5 Nile rapids to equatorial mountain summits, from canyon swims to gorilla treks, this country rewards the curious traveller. Start your Roam Beyond payment plan today."
