Full Day Itinerary
1
05:30 AM β€” Depart Kampala / Hotel
Early Departure β€” Arriving the Nile at Sunrise
Depart Kampala before sunrise for the 1.5-hour drive to Jinja and the Nile fishing villages. Arrive as the first light breaks over the river and the fishermen are hauling in their overnight nets. The Nile at 6:30am is genuinely one of Africa's most atmospheric moments.

06:30 AM β€” On the Water
Join the Fishermen β€” Nets, Canoes & the Morning Catch
Board a traditional wooden dugout canoe with a Nile fisherman guide. Join the morning net-hauling β€” pull in tilapia and Nile perch as hippos surface in the distance. Learn about traditional fishing techniques, seasonal migration patterns of Nile fish, and how entire fishing communities are organised around the river's rhythms. Witness the sorting, selection, and pricing of the morning catch as buyers arrive from Jinja's market.

Nile Perch Smoking & Village Market Walk
Return to the village and watch the fish processing in action β€” gutting, salting, and smoking Nile perch on racks above slow-burning sawdust fires. The smoking houses smell extraordinary. Walk the fishing village market β€” a labyrinth of woven baskets, fish mongers, boat repair workshops, and net-weaving women. Your guide connects you with community members and translates conversations about village life, income, seasonal challenges, and the changes brought by Lake Victoria's changing water levels.

Fresh Nile Lunch & Source of the Nile Visit
Sit down to a fresh Nile fish lunch prepared by a village cook β€” tilapia in tomato sauce, Nile perch fillet, steamed matoke, fresh cassava, and Ugandan fruit juice. After lunch, visit the Source of the Nile monument at Jinja β€” where the Nile begins its 6,650km journey to the Mediterranean. A Nile boat trip to the source marker (30 minutes each way) is included in your day. Return to Kampala by 17:00.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to be on the Nile in a dugout canoe?
Yes. The fishing village canoe experience takes place in calmer sections of the river upstream of the rapids, where the water is stable. Life jackets are provided. Your fisherman guide has navigated this river their entire life. The experience is peaceful rather than adventurous β€” this is a cultural immersion, not a water sport.
What time should I expect to return to Kampala?
The return drive from Jinja to Kampala takes approximately 1.5 hours. Departing Jinja by 15:30 gets you back to Kampala by 17:00. Traffic on the Kampala–Jinja road can be heavy on Friday afternoons β€” we factor this into your schedule and adjust accordingly.
Can I combine this with the gorilla trek or other multi-day tours?
This is an excellent arrival or departure day activity. Many guests arriving at Entebbe Airport do Jinja on day one before heading west for gorillas. It is also a perfect standalone day trip for Kampala-based travellers. Our team will integrate it into any itinerary seamlessly.
