Mount Elgon Trek + Sipi Falls
4 Days · World's Largest Caldera · Abseil 100m · Coffee Farm

"Mount Elgon is an ancient extinct shield volcano straddling the Uganda–Kenya border — home to the world's largest ancient volcanic caldera (40km wide), natural hot springs, salt caves where elephants dig for minerals at night, and a peak of 4,321 metres that offers genuine highland trekking without the Rwenzori's extreme demands. Combine it with the spectacular Sipi Falls — three tiered waterfalls on the mountain's lower slopes — where you can abseil a 100-metre cascade, tour a Ugandan coffee farm, and experience Bagisu tribal culture."

Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala → Mbale → Sipi Falls (280km + 30km approach)
Drive east from Kampala on the Kampala–Jinja–Mbale highway (280km, approx. 4 hours). Stop in Mbale for lunch, then continue up the Elgon slopes to Sipi Falls (30km, 45 minutes). The road climbs through fertile Bagisu farmland, coffee shambas, and eventually reaches the escarpment edge where the three Sipi waterfalls cascade into the valley below. Check in to your Sipi lodge — most have veranda views directly overlooking the main 100m waterfall. Afternoon walk to the lower and middle falls. Briefing with your guide over dinner.
Day 2
SIPI FALLS ABSEIL (100m) + Coffee Farm Walk + Bagisu Culture
Morning: The Abseil. Sipi's main waterfall drops 100 metres in a single free-fall curtain of water. Your abseiling team (qualified ropes guides, full safety equipment) sets up the descent at the top. You step backwards off the edge. The water roars beside you. You descend the rock face alongside the cascade — partially inside the spray for much of the descent. At the bottom, you stand behind the curtain looking up. Extraordinary. Afternoon: Uganda Coffee Farm Walk. Sipi is in the heart of Uganda's finest Arabica coffee growing region — 1,800m altitude, volcanic soil, and perfect rainfall. Your farm guide leads you through the coffee processing: picking ripe cherries, pulping, fermenting, washing, drying, roasting, and grinding. You taste the finished product with a cup of some of the world's best coffee looking out over the valley. Uganda is Africa's largest coffee exporter — and this is where it begins. Evening: Bagisu Cultural Experience. The Bagisu people of eastern Uganda are renowned for their circumcision culture (Imbalu ceremony, held every 2 years), traditional music, and vibrant community life. Your cultural guide introduces you to local elders, traditional dance, and the extraordinary cliffside lifestyle of this mountain community.
Day 3
Mount Elgon Trek — Summit Day (Option A: Day Hike / Option B: Extended Trek)
Option A — Day Hike (4,000m viewpoint, 10km return): Drive to Budadiri trailhead (Elgon NP entry). Trek through montane forest to the moorland zone at approximately 4,000m — giant groundsels, alpine flowers, and extraordinary views across the Uganda–Kenya border. 5–6 hours return. Suitable for good general fitness. Option B — Extended Caldera Trek (add 1 night — supplement applies): Continue into the crater, visit the caldera floor, hot springs, and approach Wagagai Summit (4,321m). 2-day version. Ask us to extend your package. Either option returns to Sipi Falls lodge for final overnight.
Day 4
Sipi → Mbale → Kampala / Entebbe (290km)
Morning at leisure — final views of Sipi Falls in the early light (the mist is extraordinary at dawn). Drive west to Kampala (290km, approx. 4 hours). Arrive by early afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the abseil at Sipi Falls frightening?
Yes — by design. Stepping backwards off a 100-metre cliff is genuinely terrifying for approximately 10 seconds, after which the descent is controlled and magnificent. The ropes team is experienced, the equipment is certified, and the safety record at Sipi is excellent. The experience is fully manageable for anyone without severe vertigo. Many of our most nervous clients rate it as the highlight of their entire Uganda trip.
Can I visit Mount Elgon without doing the abseil?
Yes — the package includes both but they are on different days. You can do the coffee farm and cultural experience without the abseil, or the Elgon trek without Sipi. The package price remains the same. Tell us your preferences and we'll adjust the Day 2 schedule.
What is the best time of year to visit Sipi Falls?
Sipi Falls is visited year-round. The waterfall is most spectacular after rainfall (March–May and October–November) when flow is at maximum. The drier seasons (June–September, December–February) offer better hiking conditions and clearer mountain views. Coffee farm tours are most interesting during harvest season (October–January).
