Lake Victoria Island Hopping Adventure
3 Days · Ssese Islands · Ngamba Chimps · Fishing Villages · Nile Sunset

"Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake — 68,800 km² of fresh water shared between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania — and Uganda's portion is dotted with over 200 islands ranging from the busy Ssese archipelago to tiny fishing specks visible only at low water. This 3-day adventure takes you by boat from Entebbe, across the open lake to the Ssese Islands, south to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and into the fishing village communities that have lived on these waters for centuries."

Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala → Entebbe Pier → Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary → Ssese Islands
Morning transfer to Entebbe pier (20km from Kampala, 30 minutes). Board the boat. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary (2 hours). 45 minutes by boat across Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island is home to 49 rescued chimpanzees — orphaned or confiscated from the illegal pet trade. The feeding platform viewing at midday brings chimps within metres: personalities on full display, hierarchy negotiations, juveniles tumbling over each other. Conservation staff explain each chimp's story. This is one of Uganda's most moving wildlife experiences and an extraordinary education in chimpanzee rescue and rehabilitation. Continue by boat (2.5 hours) to Kalangala, main town of the Ssese Islands. The crossing over open lake water — the horizon in every direction, pelicans flying alongside the boat — is itself an experience. Check in to your island lodge.
Day 2
Ssese Islands — Fishing Village Walk + Lake Safari + Sunset Cruise
Morning: Fishing Village Walk. Your guide leads you to two traditional fishing villages on the Ssese Islands — communities whose entire economy, diet, and cultural calendar is organised around the lake and its Nile perch. Walk through the fish processing area, see the handmade dugout canoes and nets, meet the women who smoke and dry the catch, and understand how Lake Victoria's ecology has shaped human life for thousands of years. Afternoon: Lake Boat Safari. A 2-hour open-water safari around the southern Ssese Islands — birding (African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, cormorant colonies, grey heron), swimming from the boat in deep lake water, and exploring small uninhabited islands on foot. Evening: Sunset Cruise. As the sun drops over the lake, your boat moves to the open water for a 45-minute sunset cruise. The light over Lake Victoria at dusk — the islands silhouetted, the pelicans returning to roost — is one of Uganda's most beautiful natural moments.
Day 3
Ssese Islands → Entebbe → Kampala
Morning at leisure on the Ssese Islands — optional swimming, birding, or hammock time. Board the return ferry to Entebbe. Transfer to Kampala. Arrive by mid-afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ferry schedule for the Ssese Islands?
The MV Kalangala ferry operates from Nakiwogo pier (Entebbe area) to Buggala Island (Ssese) three times per week. Faster speedboats operate more frequently. We manage all booking and timing — you just need to be at the pier. We select the most suitable crossing for your departure date.
Is swimming in Lake Victoria safe?
Swimming is safe on the Ssese Islands in designated swimming areas. Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is present in some nearshore areas, which is why we use designated swimming spots on the open lake side of the islands where risk is lower. We advise on all safety precautions and the risk is manageable with correct information.
Is Ngamba Island the same as wild chimp tracking?
No — Ngamba is a sanctuary for rescued chimps who cannot be released into the wild. The experience is very different from wild tracking in Kibale: you view the chimps from a platform during feeding time, rather than tracking them through forest. Both are extraordinary but different. Ngamba is more educational and accessible; Kibale is more wild and adventurous.
