Overview

Uganda's Lakeside Safari Gem

Lake Mburo National Park, just 228 kilometers from Kampala, is Uganda's smallest savanna national park and its most accessible from the capital. Spread across 370 square kilometers, the park protects a beautiful landscape of five interconnected lakes, papyrus swamps, rocky hills, seasonally flooded valleys, and open acacia savanna — all within the Ankole cattle-farming heartland of central-western Uganda.

What makes Lake Mburo uniquely special is what it offers that no other Uganda park can match: zebras and impalas (found nowhere else in Uganda), horseback safaris through the wildlife-rich savanna, walking safaris led by armed rangers (one of very few Uganda parks permitting this), and night drives revealing nocturnal species.

Lake Mburo is the perfect stopover on the journey between Kampala and Bwindi/Queen Elizabeth — turning a transit into a two-night safari and dramatically improving your itinerary value.

Unique to Lake Mburo

Only in Lake Mburo

Zebra: The only park in Uganda with Burchell's zebra — hundreds graze the savanna plains year-round.

Impala: The only park in Uganda where Uganda's national symbol, the impala (not kob), can be seen in large herds.

Eland: Africa's largest antelope is common here — great herds on the open plains.

Horseback Safaris: The only Uganda park offering horseback safaris. Approaching zebra, hippo, and buffalo on horseback is extraordinary.

Walking Safaris: One of few Uganda parks permitting extensive bush walks — a fundamentally different wildlife experience.

Getting There

Access & Practicalities

From Kampala: 3.5–4 hour drive via Mbarara Highway (very good tarmac road). Lake Mburo is the closest national park to Kampala and Entebbe Airport — making it ideal for short safaris.

Best time: Year-round. Dry seasons (Jun–Sep, Dec–Feb) better for game viewing on open plains. Wet season brings green scenery and excellent birding.

Accommodation: Mihingo Lodge (luxury), Rwakobo Rock (luxury), Mantana Tented Camp (mid-range), UWA Bandas (budget). Lakeside camping inside the park available.

Key Wildlife

Wildlife at a Glance

Zebra, impala, buffalo, eland, topi, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, reedbuck, warthog, hippo, crocodile, leopard (nocturnal), spotted hyena, jackal, 500+ hippos on the lake, civet, serval, and genet on night drives.

Notable absent species (compared to western parks): no lion, no elephant, no giraffe. But the park's unique combination of zebra, impala, walking safaris, and horseback makes it complementary rather than competitive with larger parks.
