Uganda Birdwatching Guide 2025 β€” The Ultimate Destination for Over 1,000 Species

πŸ“… Updated June 2025⏱ 11 min read✍ Roam Beyond Tours

Uganda is one of the world's foremost birding destinations β€” and yet it remains largely undiscovered by the global birding community. With over 1,066 recorded bird species packed into a country the size of the UK, Uganda achieves a bird diversity that rivals anywhere in Africa β€” and surpasses most of the world. From the prehistoric-looking Shoebill stork lurking in papyrus swamps to the electric jewel-flash of the African pitta on a forest floor, Uganda's birds are a source of wonder and obsession for ornithologists and casual wildlife watchers alike. Uganda sits at the intersection of East African savannah, West African rainforest, and Albertine Rift endemics β€” a convergence zone that creates extraordinary diversity.

The Shoebill Stork β€” Uganda's Most Iconic Bird

No bird on Earth generates more excitement among serious birders than the Shoebill stork (Balaeniceps rex). Standing 1.2 metres tall with a massive shoe-shaped bill that can crack a lungfish in half, it looks like a bird designed by evolution on a dramatic whim. The Shoebill is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN with an estimated global population of only 5,000–8,000 individuals. Uganda is the best country on Earth to see one in the wild. The papyrus swamps of Mabamba Bay Wetland on the northern shore of Lake Victoria (just 45 minutes from Entebbe) are the most accessible Shoebill site in the world, with trained local guides leading canoe trips into the papyrus to find these extraordinary birds.

Other productive Shoebill sites in Uganda include the Murchison Falls area (north bank of the Nile), Ziwa Wetlands, and Lake Albert's margins. Roam Beyond Tours includes Shoebill excursions in many of our itineraries as an opening or closing day activity near Entebbe.
