Overview

Uganda's Window to the Congo Basin

Semliki National Park, in western Uganda's Bundibugyo District, is one of Africa's most unique parks — a low-altitude, tropical rainforest that represents the easternmost extension of the vast Congo Basin forest, the world's second-largest rainforest. This connection to Central Africa brings plants, animals, and birds found nowhere else in East Africa.

The park's ancient forests — among the oldest in Africa, surviving unchanged through multiple ice ages — shelter species with predominantly Central African distributions: forest elephants, chimpanzees, pygmy hippopotamus (rare sightings), and over 200 bird species with Congo Basin affinities, including 35 found nowhere else in Uganda.

Semliki's greatest attraction for serious wildlife enthusiasts is its birds. The park records 441 species — including 35 Central African species found nowhere else in Uganda. This makes it indispensable for Uganda's serious birders and a must for those targeting the Albertine Rift endemic list.

The Sempaya Hot Springs

🌋 Sempaya Hot Springs

Semliki's most famous attraction — two remarkable groups of boiling hot springs: the "female spring" (Nyasimbi) and "male spring" (Bintente). The main female spring shoots water 2 meters into the air at near-boiling temperatures, surrounded by an eerie landscape of steam, mineral deposits, and bleached ground. Eggs can be boiled in minutes.

The springs sit within a 2km guided nature trail through forest — an extraordinary combination of geology, botany, and wildlife in one compact walk.

Planning

Visiting Semliki

Getting there: 6–7 hours from Kampala via Fort Portal; 2 hours from Fort Portal. The road from Fort Portal to Bundibugyo descends dramatically over the Rwenzori escarpment — one of Uganda's most spectacular drives. 4WD recommended.

Accommodation: Semliki Safari Lodge (luxury), UWA Forest Camp (budget). Fort Portal offers wider options for those doing day trips.

Best time: December–February and June–August. Heavy rains June–November can make roads very challenging.

Combination

Queen Elizabeth + Semliki

Semliki is easily combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park (2.5 hours south) and the Rwenzori Mountains (2 hours northeast from Fort Portal). A 5–7 day western Uganda circuit — Queen Elizabeth, Semliki, Rwenzori, and Fort Portal Crater Lakes — is one of Uganda's most underrated and rewarding itineraries.

The Fort Portal Crater Lakes (outside Semliki) are additionally worth a half-day visit for scenery, community walks, and birding around the emerald crater lake surfaces.

Semliki rewards the curious traveler with species and experiences found nowhere else in East Africa.
